How to calculate cat fountain filter cost per year
Price per filter = pack price ÷ filters per pack.
Annual filter consumption = 365 ÷ replacement interval in days.
Annualized filter cost = price per filter × annual filter consumption.
For example, an imaginary six-pack costing $20 has a unit cost of about $3.33. At a 30-day interval, annual consumption is 12.17 filters, or about $40.56 in annualized filter cost. A shopping budget must use whole filters and packs instead of buying 0.17 of a cartridge.

With a fresh filter installed at day zero, the number of replacement events during the year can be one less than the total filters needed to cover that year.

PETLIBRO’s Dockstream 2 product information recommends replacing its filter every two weeks for one pet, with more frequent changes for multiple pets. Catit’s PIXI filter page specifies a 30-day replacement interval. These are manufacturer instructions for the identified products, not interchangeable rules. How much electricity does a cat water fountain use?
Annual electricity cost = average watts × 24 × 365 ÷ 1,000 × price per kWh. Use the actual energy rate from your bill. If you measured total kWh over a representative period, scale that measurement to a year instead. The watt-to-kWh method follows the standard approach explained by Australia’s government energy guidance.
For a hypothetical average draw of 3 watts at $0.20 per kWh, annual electricity cost is $5.26. This is an example, not a measurement of Dockstream, PIXI or any other fountain. In the linked tool, leave electricity blank if its cost is unknown. Enter zero only when zero is a deliberate, known assumption.
An adapter’s maximum output is not necessarily the device’s average consumption. Battery charging, sensor modes and standby time complicate estimates. When using a safely positioned plug-in energy meter, include a representative operating or charging cycle and follow the meter’s instructions. Do not assume a cordless fountain has no electricity cost simply because it is unplugged while operating.
First-year spending versus ongoing running cost
Continue the hypothetical example: the fountain costs $60, the six-pack costs $20, one filter is included, replacement occurs every 30 days, and annual electricity costs $5.26. Covering the year needs 13 filters in total. After the included filter, twelve purchased filters mean two six-packs costing $40.
First-year cash budget: $60 + $40 + $5.26 = $105.26. The annualized ongoing running estimate is approximately $45.81, before other costs. Included stock and leftover filters explain why the purchase budget and annualized estimate differ.
For two fountains, calculate each device separately and add the results. Their filters, included stock, cleaning needs or settings may differ. Shared bulk packs can change actual buying costs. The standalone calculator annualizes usage; it does not round to whole packs or subtract included filters. Use a separate shopping budget for those adjustments.
Other costs to include without guessing
- Separate consumables: pre-filter sponges or other parts not supplied with each cartridge pack.
- Delivery and tax: use the expected annual amount if it is not already included in your pack price.
- Optional subscriptions: count services you actually intend to keep, using their recurring terms.
- Replacement parts: enter a planned allowance only if you want one; it is not a prediction that a pump or rotor will fail.
- Cleaning supplies: include the portion of spending attributable to the fountain if it matters to your comparison.
Do not enter the same cost twice. For example, if the pack price already includes shipping and tax, adding those charges again in a separate budget exaggerates the total. Cleaning supplies, delivery, subscriptions and your time may need a separate budget; the standalone tool does not include dedicated fields for all of these costs.

Questions about fountain ownership costs
Is the cheapest filter pack always the best value?
No. Compare the price per compatible replacement set and the required interval. A larger pack may lower unit cost, but unsuitable filters are not a saving.
Can I save money by skipping filters?
Do not remove a required filter to make the spreadsheet look cheaper. Follow the device’s instructions. If considering a fountain designed without disposable cartridges, compare its cleaning and other maintenance requirements on their own terms.
Does a water filter replace cleaning?
No. Replacing consumables and cleaning the fountain are separate jobs. Keep both in the routine and provide another clean water source while the fountain is being serviced.
How do I compare a subscription deal?
Calculate the first order and subsequent orders separately. Record pack size, delivery interval, recurring discount, shipping and cancellation terms. A discounted first shipment should not be treated as the price for every order all year.
