Pet Camera Not Recording? A Step-by-Step Checklist

If your pet camera shows a live view but has no recordings, check storage or plan availability, the recording schedule and the playback date first. Do not format the card or factory-reset the camera until you have protected important footage.

Menu names differ across brands and app versions. The Tapo examples below come from manufacturer support; they are not universal instructions for every camera.

1. Protect recordings you need

Download or export important footage using the manufacturer’s supported method before troubleshooting that changes storage. Formatting erases card contents; a reset can change configuration. If the device has an electrical fault, damaged cable or unusual overheating, stop using it and follow manufacturer support advice.

2. Confirm what your model can record

A live stream is not proof that recordings are included. For example, Scout’s current product page lists free live viewing but no saved video storage on its free plan, and no SD support. A Tapo C260 offers card storage and optional cloud storage. Check the exact model rather than assuming all products from one brand behave the same way.

3. Check recording settings and date

TP-Link directs Tapo users to Camera Settings → Storage & Recording → Local Recording, then to the recording schedule. Check whether the affected hours are covered and whether the selected mode requires a detection event. In playback, select the correct date. Review time-zone settings if clips appear at unexpected times.

4. Check the card before replacing the camera

If your model uses a card, confirm that the app recognizes it and that its capacity and type are supported. Check manufacturer guidance on compatible cards and firmware. Repeated gaps can have several causes, including schedule settings, power interruptions or card problems. A new camera is not the first diagnostic step.

If support recommends formatting, back up accessible footage first and follow the model-specific procedure. Do not assume a larger card is supported or that every card sold for a phone is a suitable recording choice.

5. Check cloud history and renewal

Confirm that the subscription applies to this camera and that its retention period covers the missing date. Inspect plan status after a trial ends. Expired retention and footage that was never recorded are different problems; buying a plan now does not establish that past footage can be recovered.

6. Test one change at a time

Trigger a harmless test event inside the camera’s view, note the time, and check playback after the device has processed it. Record the setting changed and the result. If the failure continues, send support the model, firmware, app version, storage type, recording mode and exact times of missing footage. Keep account credentials and private clips out of public forums.

Common recording questions

Why does my camera miss my cat?

Check coverage and detection settings first. A cat hidden by furniture or outside an activity zone may not produce the event you expect. Recognition and tracking are not guarantees that every movement is saved.

Does no subscription mean no recording?

Not always. Some cameras support local card recording; others require a paid cloud plan for saved clips. Compare the subscription-free recording options before switching.

When should I replace it?

After troubleshooting, replace a camera if it cannot provide a required feature, is unsupported or is confirmed faulty. Use our cat camera buying guide to compare the relevant features.
