Research-based comparison · Prices and specifications checked October 1, 2026
Quick answer: Choose Litter-Robot 4 if you want the lower price, a longer ownership track record and the same core automatic-cleaning experience. Choose Litter-Robot 5 if you have a cat over 25 pounds, need carpet support without a separate tray, want WasteID and an easier LCD interface, or value its larger drawer and extra headroom. Current Litter-Robot 4 owners usually should not upgrade unless one of those differences solves a real problem.
Research-based comparison: MeowBay checked manufacturer specifications and purchase terms. We have not performed a side-by-side hands-on test. Capacity and performance claims below are manufacturer claims, not our measurements.
Litter-Robot 4 or 5? Choose the right one for your home and cat
At current US list prices, Litter-Robot 4 starts at $699 and Litter-Robot 5 starts at $799. LR5 is the stronger first purchase for large cats, four-to-five-cat homes, carpeted placement and owners who will use WasteID. LR4 is the better-value choice when every cat weighs 25 pounds or less and the newer features do not solve a specific problem.
- WasteID: LR5 distinguishes urine from feces, allowing more clumping time after urine and a faster cycle after solid waste. LR4 does not have WasteID.
- Capacity: Whisker positions LR5 for up to five cats and about ten days between drawer emptying for one cat; LR4 is positioned for up to four cats and about eight days.
- Cat weight: LR5 is rated for cats from 3 to 30 pounds; LR4 is rated for 3 to 25 pounds. Neither is rated for automatic operation below three pounds.
- Size and placement: both use a 22 × 27-inch footprint and a 15.75-inch-square opening. LR5 adds one inch of interior headroom and built-in carpet support.
- Interface: LR5 adds a color LCD and an adjustable LED night light. The standard LR5 does not include cameras; those are exclusive to LR5 Pro.
Bottom line: first-time buyers should pay the $100 premium only when LR5’s fit, capacity, carpet support or WasteID matters. Owners of a reliable LR4 should normally keep it.
Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 verdict
Litter-Robot 4 is the better value for most one- to three-cat households. It performs the same fundamental job, costs $100 less at current list prices and supports cats from 3 to 25 pounds. Its free app features include weight identification, visit tracking and a seven-day view of activity. It also has the advantage of being the older, more widely owned platform.
Litter-Robot 5 is the better fit for large cats, fuller households and carpeted rooms. It expands the documented weight range to 30 pounds, supports up to five cats according to Whisker, has slightly more headroom, distributes waste through a larger drawer and sits on carpet without a separate Carpet Tray. WasteID and the full-color LCD add useful information, but they do not change the basic cleaning mechanism.

Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 Three-Year Cost Calculator
Compare two alternative purchases using your own quotes. The US base prices are starting examples; optional and recurring costs begin at zero and must be filled in. Use one currency throughout. Currency selection changes labels only; it does not convert prices.
Enter your costs and select Compare. No running-cost estimate is assumed.
Calculation method and exclusions
Upfront = device + tax + shipping + extra warranty + Hopper + other accessories. Annual recurring = 12 × (liners + filters + litter + electricity/other monthly costs) + annual plan allocation. First year = upfront + annual recurring. Three years = upfront + 3 × annual recurring. Per-cat results divide by the entered cat count; they do not estimate resource adequacy.
Tax is an amount you supply, not a jurisdiction-based estimate. Put recurring tax into the supplied monthly totals. Estimates assume unchanged costs, no inflation, no financing, no resale value and no repairs unless included in your entries. This compares two purchase options, not the incremental value of replacing a robot you already own.
Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 price: which costs less over three years?
Litter-Robot 4 remains $100 cheaper if both households choose the same optional services. Current base prices are $699 for LR4 and $799 for LR5. Both use compatible clumping litter, drawer liners and carbon filtration, so household usage has more influence on recurring supply costs than the model name alone.
| Cost | LR4 | LR5 |
|---|---|---|
| Base machine | $699 | $799 |
| Optional Whisker+ for 3 years at the current annual price | $239.70 | $239.70 |
| Machine + 3 years of optional Whisker+ | $938.70 | $1,038.70 |
This arithmetic uses the currently published $79.90 annual Whisker+ price and excludes tax, shipping exceptions, litter, liners, filters, OdorTrap packs, electricity, accessories, extended warranty, repairs and price changes. One Whisker+ membership currently enhances all compatible devices on the account, so do not multiply the membership by the number of robots without checking your account terms.
Use the MeowBay Litter Box Cost Calculator with your actual litter consumption and replacement-supply prices. Do not assume either robot reduces litter use without measuring your household.
Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 size: which is better for a large cat?
Litter-Robot 5 is the safer shortlist choice for a cat approaching or exceeding 25 pounds. Whisker lists LR4 for cats from 3 to 25 pounds and LR5 for 3 to 30 pounds. LR5 also adds interior headroom while retaining the same 15.75-inch-square entrance.
Weight is not the same as comfort. A long-bodied Maine Coon may weigh less than a compact cat but still need more turning room. The LR5 exterior footprint remains 22 × 27 inches, so its extra interior space is incremental—not an open-box experience. Measure your cat from nose to the base of the tail, observe how the cat turns in the current tray and use the return window to evaluate real acceptance.
For cats that dislike enclosed globes or need substantially more open headroom, compare the options in MeowBay’s automatic litter boxes for large cats guide before assuming the LR5 solves the fit problem.
Verify: LR4 fit FAQ · LR5 fit FAQ
Headroom evidence: product FAQs list 16.5 inches for LR4 and 17.5 inches for LR5. A separate Whisker comparison article quotes up to 19 inches for LR5 depending on litter level. The graphic uses the product-FAQ figures on the same basis; it is not a MeowBay measurement or a guarantee of fit.

Does Litter-Robot 5 hold more waste or control odor better?
Whisker estimates that a one-cat LR4 household may empty the drawer around every eight days, compared with up to ten days for LR5. The LR5 drawer is larger and designed to distribute waste more evenly. That can reduce how often the drawer reaches its capacity limit.
It does not prove that LR5 will remain odor-free for ten days. Odor depends on stool consistency, urine volume, humidity, clump quality, drawer liner fit, filter condition and room ventilation. A larger drawer can hold more waste, but it also stores that waste for longer if the owner waits for a full alert.
WasteID gives LR5 another theoretical advantage: it can delay cycling after urine so a clump has time to form, while moving solid waste sooner. This may improve sifting and containment. It is still a manufacturer-designed feature, not independent proof that every LR5 room smells better than every LR4 room.
For either model, inspect the drawer daily, empty it before odor becomes noticeable and clean the globe, drawer, seals and sensor areas on the schedule your household actually needs.
What does WasteID do—and what remains free?
WasteID is exclusive to Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro. It distinguishes urine from feces and adjusts cleaning timing: urine receives more clumping time, while solid waste can be moved into the drawer sooner. The app can then organize additional routine information around those events.
WasteID is not a medical diagnosis. It does not determine why a cat urinates more often, produces loose stool or strains. Any concerning change still requires direct observation and veterinary advice.
Do Litter-Robot 4 or 5 require a subscription?
No. Automatic cleaning, device control, SmartScale identification and basic weight tracking remain available without Whisker+. Whisker currently provides a seven-day view of visits and individual weights on supported models. The optional membership adds up to two years of history, trends, summaries and deeper insights.
Whisker lists Whisker+ at $7.99 per month or $79.90 per year when checked. Software entitlements can change, so review the current free-versus-paid table in the app before basing a purchase on one advanced insight.
Verify: Free and paid app features
Can Litter-Robot 4 and 5 work on carpet?
Litter-Robot 5 can sit on carpet without a separate Carpet Tray because that support is integrated into its redesigned base. LR4 can operate on carpet, but Whisker recommends the model-specific Carpet Tray on thicker carpet or uneven flooring to improve SmartScale weight accuracy.
This difference matters when individual-cat identification depends on small weight differences. A soft or unstable surface can reduce the usefulness of weight trends even if the cleaning mechanism continues working.
Both robots still need a stable position, access to power, room for the cat’s approach and enough clearance to remove the globe and drawer for cleaning. Do not measure only the 22 × 27-inch footprint.
Verify: Manufacturer flooring guidance
Which is quieter and easier to clean?
Noise
Both use QuietSift. We found no directly comparable standardized noise measurements in the official specifications checked, so we cannot identify a measured noise winner.
Routine cleaning
Both require the same categories of work: empty the drawer, replace the liner, wipe the globe, remove stuck clumps, clean the sensor area, inspect the carbon filter and periodically wash removable components.
LR5 improves access to the curtain sensor lens and reduces some crevices in the base. Its waste drawer also locks into the pull-out step for stability. These details can make maintenance easier, but its 28.7-pound empty weight makes the complete unit heavier to reposition than the 24-pound LR4.
LitterHopper compatibility
Both models now have a compatible LitterHopper option, but they use model-specific hardware. Whisker says the LR5 LitterHopper holds 32% more litter than the LR4 version. The accessory maintains the fill level; it does not empty the waste drawer, clean the globe or replace daily inspection.
Verify: Model-specific LR5 LitterHopper
Which model is more reliable?
There is no public, comparable failure-rate dataset that proves either model is more reliable. LR4 has the stronger maturity argument because it launched in 2022 and has a much larger body of owner reviews. LR5 launched later and uses a redesigned base, display and newer software features.
We do not have comparable long-term failure-rate data for these models. Use the trial to check cat acceptance, sensing, reconnect behavior and cleaning access in your own home.
Whisker’s firmware-release history also shows that connected features continue to change. That is normal for smart hardware, but owners who want the simplest proven option may reasonably prefer LR4. Buyers who accept newer software in exchange for WasteID, an LCD and expanded fit may prefer LR5.
What to test during the 90-day trial
- Whether every cat enters and turns without hesitation.
- Whether the unit identifies cats accurately enough for your household.
- Whether clumps form before the selected cycle delay.
- Whether waste and litter levels update consistently.
- Whether the drawer contains odor at your real emptying interval.
- Whether Wi-Fi reconnects after a router or power interruption.
- Whether you can remove, wash, dry and reinstall components comfortably.
Are Litter-Robot 4 and 5 safe for kittens?
Whisker lists a three-pound minimum for automatic operation on both models. For a kitten under three pounds, the company instructs owners to leave the robot powered off and use a supervised semi-automatic routine until the kitten reaches the threshold.
Both use presence and weight sensing to delay or interrupt cycling. Safety still depends on correct assembly, stable placement, clean sensors, current firmware and following the manual. Keep a traditional box during the transition and stop automatic operation if the unit moves unexpectedly or a cat becomes frightened.
Review MeowBay’s complete automatic litter-box safety checklist before switching.
Which model is better for multiple cats?
Whisker positions LR4 for up to four cats and LR5 for up to five. LR5’s larger drawer and extended weight range make it the stronger single-unit choice for a larger household.
However, “supports five cats” describes machine capacity, not ideal household resource placement. One robot remains one location. A territorial cat can block it, the unit can be offline for cleaning, and a cat may reject the enclosed globe. Maintain other accessible litter options in separate locations rather than making five cats depend on one machine.
Use MeowBay’s guide to decide whether two cats should share one automatic litter box.
Is Litter-Robot 5 worth upgrading from Litter-Robot 4?
Usually no—not while the LR4 works reliably and fits every cat. The upgrade does not give you a smaller footprint, wider entry or fundamentally different cleaning mechanism. Spending $799 to replace a functioning premium box is difficult to justify for an LCD, two extra claimed drawer days and WasteID alone.
Upgrade to LR5 when…
- a cat exceeds or is approaching the LR4’s 25-pound operating range;
- your tall cat needs the additional headroom;
- the unit must sit on carpet and you want integrated support;
- four or five cats are filling the LR4 drawer too quickly;
- WasteID and clearer on-device error messages solve a specific monitoring problem;
- your LR4 needs replacement anyway and the $100 difference fits the budget.
Keep LR4 when…
- all cats fit comfortably and weigh 25 pounds or less;
- the drawer interval already works for your routine;
- the robot sits on a hard floor or your Carpet Tray works;
- you value the larger ownership history more than the newest interface;
- you expected LR5 to include cameras—the standard model does not;
- the upgrade would reduce the budget available for litter, veterinary care or additional litter locations.
Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 at Costco: compare the bundle, not only the price
Costco lists an LR4 LitterHopper bundle with a ramp, mat, odor-control accessories, liners and three-year coverage. Member pricing was not visible in our check; enter your actual checkout quote in the calculator instead of assuming a fixed bundle price.
That is not the same purchase as a base $799 LR5. The Costco offer gives you the older robot plus accessories and longer included coverage; the direct LR5 price gives you the newer base model with WasteID, the larger drawer, additional headroom, 30-pound limit, LCD and integrated carpet support.
Choose the Costco LR4 bundle if its accessories are items you would buy anyway and every cat fits LR4. Choose the base LR5 if cat fit, capacity or LR5-only features matter more than the bundled extras. Verify membership pricing, inventory, color, shipping, returns and warranty at checkout because Costco offers can change. Do not assume an LR5 bundle contains the same accessories or coverage.
Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 vs EVO—and when 5 Pro makes sense
The related searches “Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 Pro” and “Litter-Robot 5 vs 5 Pro” mix two different decisions. LR5 Pro is not a larger or better-cleaning LR5; it is the camera-equipped version. EVO is the smaller, lower-priced model for lighter-use homes.
| Model | Starting price | Published fit | Best reason to choose it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Litter-Robot EVO | $599 | Up to 2 cats; 3–19 lb | Lowest price, smallest footprint and simpler entry into automatic litter boxes. | Smaller opening and interior; fewer advanced sensing and accessory options. |
| Litter-Robot 4 | $699 | Up to 4 cats; 3–25 lb | Best balance of established ownership history and current price. | No WasteID, LCD or integrated carpet tray. |
| Litter-Robot 5 | $799 | Up to 5 cats; 3–30 lb | Best default for large cats, fuller households and carpet. | No built-in camera; newer platform with less long-term owner history. |
| Litter-Robot 5 Pro | $899 | Up to 5 cats; 3–30 lb | Integrated dual cameras for visual monitoring and camera-based identification. | $100 above LR5, and some enhanced camera features require Whisker+. |
Owner recommendation: choose EVO only when its 19-pound limit and compact interior fit every cat; LR4 for value; LR5 for fit and capacity; and LR5 Pro only when integrated cameras are worth another $100. Do not pay for Pro expecting better sifting—the underlying LR5 cleaning platform and physical dimensions are the same.

Final buying decision
Buy Litter-Robot 4 for value. It retains automatic sifting, odor containment, weight tracking, multi-cat support and the free Whisker app while saving $100. It is the stronger default for cats under 25 pounds when carpet integration and WasteID are not necessary.
Buy Litter-Robot 5 for fit and capacity. The extra headroom, 30-pound limit, larger drawer, carpet-ready base, WasteID and LCD are meaningful when your household will actually use them. The $100 premium is reasonable for a first-time buyer with a large cat or four-to-five-cat household.
Existing LR4 owner? Keep it until reliability, cat fit or household capacity creates a reason to replace it. A newer model is not automatically a better financial decision.

Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 frequently asked questions
What are the key differences between Litter-Robot 4 and 5?
Litter-Robot 5 adds WasteID, a color LCD, a larger and better-distributed drawer, one inch of interior headroom, integrated carpet support, a 30-pound weight limit and support for up to five cats. Litter-Robot 4 costs $100 less, supports cats from 3 to 25 pounds and has a longer ownership history. Both have the same 22 × 27-inch footprint and 15.75-inch-square opening.
Is it worth upgrading to Litter-Robot 5 from Litter-Robot 4?
Usually not if your LR4 is reliable and every cat fits. Upgrade when you need LR5’s 30-pound range, added headroom, larger drawer, built-in carpet support or WasteID. Otherwise, the basic sifting experience and external footprint are too similar to justify replacing a functioning $699 machine.
Is a Litter-Robot 5 worth it?
LR5 is worth its $799 starting price when a large cat, four-to-five-cat household, carpeted room or WasteID makes LR4 a compromise. LR4 is usually the better value for one to three cats under 25 pounds. Existing LR4 owners should normally keep their working unit rather than upgrade for novelty.
Which Litter-Robot is best for a large cat?
Litter-Robot 5 is the better starting point because it supports cats from 3 to 30 pounds and adds interior headroom. LR4 is listed for 3 to 25 pounds. The entrance is the same size, so use the 90-day trial to confirm turning space and acceptance.
Does Litter-Robot 5 require a subscription?
No. Automatic cleaning, core device control, SmartScale identification and basic tracking work without Whisker+. The optional membership adds longer historical data, summaries and deeper insights. Confirm current entitlements because app features can change.
Does Litter-Robot 4 require a subscription?
No. LR4 retains its basic app features without Whisker+, including SmartScale identification, weight tracking and a recent activity view. The membership expands history and reporting.
Can Litter-Robot 4 sit on carpet?
Yes, but Whisker recommends the separate LR4 Carpet Tray on thicker carpet or uneven flooring to improve SmartScale accuracy. LR5 integrates carpet support into its base.
Does Litter-Robot 5 have a camera?
No. The standard Litter-Robot 5 does not contain a camera. Dual integrated cameras are a Litter-Robot 5 Pro feature.
Which model holds more waste?
Litter-Robot 5 has the larger drawer and improved waste distribution. Whisker estimates up to ten days between emptying for one cat, compared with about eight days for LR4. Actual intervals vary and neither drawer should go uninspected.
Is Litter-Robot 5 quieter than Litter-Robot 4?
Both use QuietSift technology, but Whisker does not publish directly comparable decibel measurements on the current product pages. There is not enough standardized evidence to name a measured noise winner.
Can five cats use one Litter-Robot 5?
Whisker lists LR5 for up to five cats, but one machine is still one litter location and can become unavailable or guarded. Multi-cat homes should maintain additional clean litter resources in separate areas.
What is the difference between Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro?
Both share the larger globe, 3–30-pound range, WasteID and five-cat positioning. Litter-Robot 5 Pro adds dual 1080p cameras and camera-based identification features. Some advanced camera insights require Whisker+.
