PLAN BEYOND THE BOX PRICE
Estimate monthly cat litter expenses and the total cost of a manual or automatic litter box using your own prices and household usage.
No assumed litter savings, device lifespan or brand advantage. Unknown optional expenses stay visibly excluded.
Your litter box budget
Use one currency and the same unit for package size and monthly usage. Enter your household total; do not multiply it by the number of cats again.

Constant-price scenarios, not lifespan predictions. Totals exclude any unentered expenses, replacement boxes, inflation and your time. Fractional package use is averaged; actual checkout spending differs.
How much does a litter box cost per month?
Monthly running cost equals litter used plus any entered waste bags, odor-control supplies, electricity and other maintenance. The purchase price is shown separately and added once to ownership totals. There is no universal monthly amount: use your own household consumption and compatible supplies.
How to calculate monthly cat litter costs
Monthly litter cost = package price ÷ package quantity × quantity used per month. For example, a hypothetical $20 package containing 10 kg costs $2 per kg. Using 8 kg per month gives $16 per month, or $192 per year, for litter alone. These figures are an arithmetic example, not a recommended quantity or a current product price.
Automatic litter box cost: 1-, 3- and 5-year example
Assume a $400 box, $16 monthly litter, $3 bags, $2 odor-control supplies and $1 electricity. Other maintenance is unknown and excluded. The included monthly running cost is $22 and the annual cost is $264.
| Period | Running costs | Purchase + running costs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | $264 | $664 |
| 3 years | $792 | $1,192 |
| 5 years | $1,320 | $1,720 |
A five-year projection does not mean a box will last five years. The calculator does not predict failures, repair bills or a replacement device. Costs are kept unrounded during calculation and rounded for display.
Compare automatic and traditional litter box costs fairly
Run each scenario with the same currency and period. Enter the correct compatible litter and supplies for each box, and use its own measured or estimated usage. An automatic box is not assumed to use less litter. A manual box may have zero electricity costs; enter zero if that applies. This calculator compares expenses, not cleaning effectiveness or suitability for an individual cat.
What to include in each field
- Litter package: include its actual price and amount, using the same unit as consumption. A liter is not automatically a kilogram.
- Monthly litter: estimate total consumption including top-ups and complete changes. For multiple cats, enter household usage once.
- Bags and odor control: divide pack price by the number of usable items and multiply by items used per month.
- Electricity: use a measured monthly cost if available. An assumed average wattage × operating hours ÷ 1,000 × your electricity rate gives an estimate; rated peak wattage may not represent average use.
- Other maintenance: include a monthly allowance for cleaning supplies, replacement parts or subscriptions you intend to model, without counting the same expense twice.
Why purchase spending differs from averaged costs
If you use 8 kg from a 10 kg package per month, the model allocates 80% of the package price to that month. You still pay for a full package at checkout. Stock already at home, discounts, delivery charges and unused supplies affect cash flow. This is a consumption-cost model, not a purchasing calendar.
Litter box cost calculator FAQ
Can I use this for PETLIBRO or another automatic litter box?
Yes. Enter the exact model’s costs and compatible supplies. No brand, affiliate commission or merchant affects the calculation.
How do I account for two or more cats?
Enter the total monthly litter and supplies for the household or boxes being modeled. Do not multiply household totals by cat count. Consumption is not assumed to increase linearly with each cat.
Does selecting GBP or EUR convert prices?
No. Currency selection changes display only. All entered amounts must already use the same currency.
What if I do not know electricity or maintenance costs?
Leave them blank. They remain excluded and the result is labeled a partial estimate. Blank is not treated as a confirmed zero.
Are automatic litter boxes cheaper over time?
This tool does not assume that. Compare your own purchase and recurring costs. It does not put a monetary value on cleaning time or predict savings.
Does the tool recommend a cleaning schedule?
No. Enter usage appropriate to your setup; do not reduce cleaning or litter replacement simply to lower the estimate. Follow applicable product instructions.
Methodology and limits
Annual running cost is monthly cost × 12. Ownership cost is purchase price + annual running cost × years. The calculator uses your inputs and elementary arithmetic, with no independent performance testing claims. Estimates assume constant consumption and prices. No account is required and the calculation happens in your browser.
