Why shape matters as much as diameter
A round 15 mm piece and a flat 15 mm disc can behave differently inside the same hopper. Square pieces can bridge across an outlet, flat pieces can overlap, and oily surfaces can increase friction. Broken crumbs can also collect around the rotor and change later dispenses.
Measure at least 10 pieces with a millimetre ruler or caliper. Record the widest piece, not the average. When the largest piece is close to a feeder’s maximum, choose a wider documented food path or test repeated supervised cycles before relying on it.
The 10-dispense reliability test
- Fill the hopper to the level you expect to use normally.
- Run 10 identical manual dispenses into an empty bowl.
- Weigh each output separately and note every partial release or jam.
- Repeat after installing any splitter, hopper insert or replacement rotor.
- Repeat whenever you change food shape, recipe or bag size.
A successful fit test does not prove long-term reliability. Run scheduled meals while you are present, test approved backup power separately, and arrange a human check-in whenever you are away.
Large kibble, small portions
A wide food path can solve one problem while creating another. Many feeders meter food by chamber volume, so one “portion” may weigh about 5 g, 10 g or a fraction of a cup depending on the model and food. Large airy pieces and dense small pieces can produce different gram weights at the same setting.
