Litter-Robot 5 is the better fit for very large cats, a wider entrance, a long in-home trial, and Whisker’s connected ecosystem. PETKIT PuraMax 2 is the stronger value when you need a shorter enclosure, a low entry, broader international availability, and a much lower official price. Neither is automatically better for every cat.

Cat fit: Litter-Robot wins for size; PETKIT wins for compact height
Litter-Robot 5’s 15.75-inch-square opening, 17.5 inches of internal headroom, and 30 lb maximum create the stronger specification case for a large or broad cat. PuraMax 2’s entrance is much smaller and its limit is 22 lb.
PuraMax 2 is only 21.73 inches tall, more than eight inches shorter than LR5. Its 7.87-inch step is also low relative to Neakasa’s open-top M1. Safety: different systems, same owner responsibilities
Whisker describes a multi-layer SafeCat system using lasers, weight sensors, and anti-obstruction technology. PETKIT describes 11 sensors and an anti-pinch structure designed to keep the entrance open during rotation at the critical angle. Both have minimum cat-weight guidance.
Do not reduce safety to “11 sensors versus several sensors.” Installation, floor, firmware, delay settings, assembly, obstruction behavior, daily inspection, and the cat’s actual use all matter. Odor control: adaptive timing versus multiple deodorizing layers
Litter-Robot 5’s WasteID is designed to distinguish urine from feces: it can wait longer for urine clumps and cycle sooner for solid waste. The drawer uses carbon filtration, with optional OdorTrap products.
PuraMax 2 uses a sealed cylinder and drawer plus optional N50 and spray systems. PETKIT publishes laboratory ammonia and bacteria reduction claims for its products. Those figures are not a direct independent comparison with LR5. In both systems, litter, seals, smearing, leaks, waste volume, and cleaning will dominate long-term odor. Litter and cleaning
Both are built around compatible clumping litter rather than every litter type. PETKIT includes replaceable sifter options for different particle sizes. Whisker specifies compatible clumping litter and offers its own litter and accessories.
PuraMax 2’s sealed cylinder is designed to reduce edge leakage, but PETKIT acknowledges that soft stool or poor covering can create streaking. Litter-Robot’s globe, liner, screen, drawer, seals, sensors, and filter also require manual cleaning. Compare disassembly videos and the cleaning manual before buying; “self-cleaning” refers to sifting waste, not washing the machine.
Apps and household data
Whisker emphasizes individual weight, visits, drawer status, WasteID records, and optional paid features on newer models. PETKIT emphasizes weight, visit logs, cleaning controls, consumable functions, and alerts. Feature availability can differ by app version, subscription, country, and model.
In a multi-cat home, weight-based identification becomes less certain when cats weigh nearly the same. Neither app can diagnose urinary, kidney, digestive, or behavioral conditions. Use trends as prompts to look closer or contact a veterinarian.
Cost and ownership
The purchase-price difference is large: LR5 started at about $799 while PuraMax 2 showed a $499.99 list price and a lower sale price when checked. Promotional pricing changes, so compare the delivered total.
- Litter-Robot: liners, carbon filters, optional OdorTrap, ramp, carpet tray, LitterHopper, and extended warranty can add cost.
- PETKIT: bags, N50, spray liquid, replacement cylinder or pad, step, and potential subscription features can add cost.
Which should you buy?
- the cat needs the larger opening or 30 lb range;
- you want the 90-day in-home trial;
- you value Whisker’s parts and support ecosystem;
- WasteID and richer monitoring justify the cost;
- you live in a currently supported market.
- you need a shorter machine and low entry;
- the cat fits comfortably inside the 22 lb range and smaller entrance;
- price difference is important;
- PETKIT has stronger official support in your country;
- you can provide the required firm, level floor.
Choose neither if the cat dislikes enclosed boxes, needs a very large uncovered litter bed, or cannot use the entry comfortably. Compare other Litter-Robot alternatives and keep a traditional box available during any trial.
