The best automatic litter box for a small apartment is the one you can place, open, clean, ventilate, and reach without blocking the cat’s route. Exterior footprint alone is not enough: add service clearance, a litter mat or ramp, drawer access, cable space, and somewhere to place a backup box.

PetSafe Australia publishes dimensions of 67 × 48 × 53 cm, or roughly 26.4 × 18.9 × 20.9 inches. The narrow width can help beside a laundry unit, bathroom wall, or cabinet where a 21- or 22-inch-wide robot will not fit.
Do not wedge it into the measured rectangle. Leave room for the entrance, drawer, cleaning, power cord, airflow, and a path the cat cannot be cornered in. PetSafe’s sealed and deodorized drawer may help a shared living area, but real odor control still depends on litter and emptying.

The compromise is vertical access. The 13.86-inch entry is not apartment-friendly if it forces you to add a large improvised staircase. Use only a stable access solution that does not interfere with sensors, and keep the firmware current.

3. PETKIT PuraMax 2
PuraMax 2 is 21.73 inches high and has a 7.87-inch entrance height. That combination can fit under visual lines where Litter-Robot’s near-30-inch body dominates the room, while remaining easier to step into than Neakasa’s published entry.
PETKIT says the unit must sit on a firm, level surface and should not be placed on carpet. Leave at least the manufacturer’s stated wall clearance and enough room to remove and wash the cylinder. The smaller enclosed opening may not suit a very large or enclosure-sensitive cat.

Why Litter-Robot 5 is not the automatic small-space winner
Its 22-inch width is reasonable, but the 27-inch depth, 29.9-inch height, front access, and optional ramp create a larger real-use zone. It can still work beautifully in an apartment with a dedicated corner; it is not the first choice when every inch is contested. Measure it with tape on the floor and wall before ordering.
Apartment placement rules that matter more than style
- Do not place it beside food or water. Cats generally prefer toileting resources separated from feeding areas.
- Avoid dead-end ambush points. The cat should be able to approach and exit without another pet blocking the only route.
- Do not hide it in an unventilated cabinet. The box needs the airflow and clearances required by the manual.
- Protect quiet hours. Use delayed or do-not-disturb scheduling only if waste will not remain too long for the household.
- Plan the cleaning route. You need somewhere to carry, wash, dry, and reassemble removable parts.
- Preserve a backup. A fold-away plan is not enough if the robot fails while you are away; keep another usable box available.
