How We Test Cat Products
Our testing process is what sets MeowBay apart from sites that simply rewrite Amazon descriptions. Here’s our actual workflow:
Step 1: Ingredient & Nutritional Analysis
We evaluate the full ingredient list, guaranteed analysis, calorie density, and AAFCO compliance statement. We check whether the product meets AAFCO standards through feeding trials (the gold standard) or just formulation (the minimum bar). Many “premium” brands only meet the minimum — we flag this.
Step 2: Manufacturer Research
We verify whether the company employs board-certified veterinary nutritionists (ACVN diplomates), conducts feeding trials, owns their manufacturing facility, and has a recall history. These four factors predict product quality more reliably than price or marketing claims.
Step 3: Real-Cat Palatability Testing
We feed every product to our panel of 15 cats over a minimum 7-day period. We track acceptance rates, consumption volumes, and any digestive changes. The healthiest food in the world is useless if your cat won’t eat it — so palatability carries serious weight in our ratings.
Step 4: Veterinary Review
Our board-certified veterinary nutritionists review every food recommendation before publication. They evaluate our analysis, flag any concerns about ingredient interactions or nutritional completeness, and confirm or challenge our rankings.
Step 5: Cost-Per-Day Calculation
We calculate the real daily cost based on manufacturer feeding guidelines for a typical 10-lb indoor cat. This gives you an honest comparison — because a cheap bag that requires twice the serving size isn’t actually cheap.
