Cost per filter = filter pack price ÷ complete replacements per pack. Annual filter cost = cost per filter × replacements per year. A year is 365 days or 12 calendar months in this model; a week is 7 days.
Example: a $15 pack containing 4 filters costs $3.75 per filter. Replacement every 30 days means 365 ÷ 30 = approximately 12.17 replacements per year, giving $45.63 per year after rounding for display. No replacement interval is recommended by this example.
Cat fountain ownership cost: 1-, 3- and 5-year example
This hypothetical example uses a $50 fountain, a $15 pack of four complete filter replacements, and replacement every 30 days. Pump, electricity and other expenses are unknown and excluded. It is not a price quote or a maintenance recommendation for a specific product.

The calculations retain the unrounded annual filter cost of $45.625, then round each displayed total to cents. The five-year row describes a scenario; it does not establish that the fountain or its pump will last five years.
Average cost versus money spent at checkout
You cannot buy 12.17 individual filters when they only come in packs. This calculator shows the value of the filters used over time; buying whole packs can change when you spend money and leave unused filters. It does not round annual usage up to a full pack or subtract an included starter filter.
What does the ownership estimate include?
Included cost = entered purchase price + annual included maintenance × years. Maintenance includes filters and, when entered, averaged pump replacement and electricity. For example, a $25 pump with an assumed two-year interval contributes $12.50 per year; that does not predict a $12.50 purchase every year.
Blank optional fields are excluded and listed in the result. “Not entered” is different from a confirmed zero. Even when all form fields are filled, unmodeled expenses may remain.
How to compare replacement filter costs fairly
Compare the cost of one complete replacement, not just the number of pieces in a package. If a replacement uses two different components, check whether both are included and whether they follow the same schedule. This first version models one replacement interval; separate schedules need separate calculations.

Pack B has a higher purchase price but a lower cost per replacement in this example. That does not establish compatibility or quality. Only compare products that actually fit the exact fountain, and use each model’s applicable interval rather than extending a schedule to make it look cheaper.

Why compare replacement filters before buying?
A lower device price can come with different ongoing consumable costs. Compare compatible filter availability, pack contents and the exact model’s guidance using your own figures. The calculator does not favor PETLIBRO, Amazon or any other brand or merchant.
Cat water fountain cost questions
Is every 30 days the same as monthly?
No. Every 30 days gives about 12.17 replacements in 365 days. Every calendar month gives 12. Choose the unit that matches your assumption.
What if I do not know when the pump will need replacing?
Leave both pump fields blank. The result will say pump replacement is excluded rather than inventing a lifespan.
Does a three-year estimate mean my fountain will last three years?
No. It is a budgeting scenario under your entered assumptions. The tool does not model a replacement fountain or guarantee component life.
Can I compare two fountains?
Record the first result, then enter the second fountain’s values using the same currency and ownership period. Side-by-side comparison is not part of this first version.
How much does a cat water fountain cost per month?
There is no single amount for all fountains. Divide the included annual maintenance by 12. In the $15/four-filter example with a 30-day interval, filters alone average about $3.80 per month. That excludes the purchase price, pump and electricity.
Does this work for PETLIBRO or another fountain brand?
Yes, when the entered prices and replacement units describe the exact model. No brand-specific filter schedule, pump lifespan or current price is built in. The brand name does not change the math.
Does changing the currency convert my prices?
No. It changes the display currency only. Enter every amount in the same currency; the calculator does not use exchange rates.
Can I enter zero for electricity or a pump?
Only when zero is an intentional, known assumption. If the expense is unknown, leave it blank so the result lists it as excluded. A pump cost also needs a replacement interval to be annualized.
Methodology and limitations
Results are arithmetic estimates from user-entered values. There is no product performance score, health assessment or merchant preference. The model assumes constant costs and averages replacements over time. It does not forecast failures, future prices or actual checkout dates. These examples are illustrative and are not independent product testing.
